Two Richmond Co. Deputies off the job, facing charges

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Two Richmond County Deputies are now off the job and facing charges.

Johnny Atkinson is charged with One Count of Felony Aggravated Assault, One Count of Misdemeanor Battery and Felony Violation of Oath of a Public Officer.

Austin Birch is charged with One Count of Misdemeanor Battery and Felony Violation of Oath of a Public Officer.

Both have been fired from the Sheriff’s Office and booked into the Webster Detention Center.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division began an investigation into the two when they were made aware of a May 7, 2022, incident incident involving unruly inmates.

After a review of body camera and surveillance videos, investigators determined that Atkinson and Birch used unnecessary force during the incident.

Atkinson began work with the RCSO in June 2018, Birch in July 2019.

At the time of the incident, they were both assigned to the Road Patrol Division. Most recently, they were assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division.
