A 78-year-old Independence man was killed in a plane crash southwest of Scio Sunday afternoon.

Dennis Jackson was piloting a plane referred to by the Federal Aviation Administration as an Experimental Amateur Built Aircraft built in 2004, according to the Linn County Sheriff's Office. The plane was a two-seat, homebuilt aircraft.

Jackson was declared dead at the scene of the 2 p.m. crash at 37665 Richardson Gap Road. His wife, Amy Jackson, was transported by LifeFlight Air Ambulance to Salem Health with life-threatening injuries.

"A single-engine RV-8 flipped over in a field near Scio, Ore., at about 2 p.m.," the Federal Aviation Administration said.

"The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate," the FAA said. "The NTSB (National Safety Transportation Board) will be in charge of the investigation and will provide additional updates."

The crash scene will be secured overnight by Linn County Sheriff’s Office deputies. People are asked to avoid the area.

Further information will be released around 10 a.m. on Monday, the sheriff's office said.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
