One dead, one seriously injured in fiery crash on I-91 in Rocky Hill

One woman was killed and a man was seriously injured in a fiery crash on Interstate 91 in Rocky Hill Sunday.

A Dodge Stratus driven by Eralda Xhaxha, 32, of Enfield, swerved across the center and right lanes on I-91 North, colliding with a wooden sound barrier on the right shoulder between Exits 23 and 24 just before 4 p.m., according to Connecticut State Police Troop H.

The car landed on its roof as a fire was smoldering in the engine, according to the Rocky Hill Fire Department.

Firefighters and bystanders worked together to keep the fire at bay and extricated Xhaxha and her passenger, who were rushed to a hospital with serious injuries, fire officials said.

Xhaxha was pronounced dead shortly after the crash, state police said. The passenger in her vehicle, a 32-year-old man from Oxford, Massachusetts, was rushed to Hartford Hospital with serious injuries, state police said.

The northbound side of the highway was closed as officials cleared the wreck and investigated. The scene was cleared just after 7 p.m., officials said.

The crash is under investigation. Any witness to the collision is asked to contact Trooper Michael Dean at Troop H at 860-534-1098 or through email at michael.dean@ct.gov.
