INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Independence police say two people were shot and killed Friday, leading to a lockdown at nearby schools.
The shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. near N. Lynn Street and E. Nickell Avenue, police said. Several people who called 911 said they heard gunshots in the area.
When officers arrived, they found two people shot to death at a residence.
An Independence police spokesperson said the nearby William Chrisman High School and Ott Elementary School went into a brief lockdown as police searched for a suspect.
The deadly shooting had nothing to do with either school, police said.
Officers have since taken one person into custody, and the two schools have lifted their lockdowns.
Police have not released any identifying information about the two victims or details about what led up to the shooting. The case is still under investigation.
