Two Somersworth apartments struck by gunfire: Police seek public's help with investigation

SOMERSWORTH — City police are seeking the public's assistance to identify the person or people responsible for reported gunfire in the area of Green and Franklin streets about 8:22 p.m. Thursday, hitting two apartments in the Charpentier Apartments complex.

Capt. Matt Duval said Friday morning police do not yet have a suspect, nor have they identified a suspect's vehicle. He said he does not believe there is any ongoing danger to the public.

"We are doing follow-up investigations this morning," Duval said. "We have officers at the complex, and detectives are interviewing potential witnesses. We are looking to see if there is video surveillance in the area."

Police received multiple calls Thursday evening about the shots being fired. Officers found several spent shell casings on Green Street adjacent to Charpentier Apartments, located at 28 Franklin St. The complex is owned by the Somersworth Housing Authority.

Police said gunfire rounds went through windows and into two apartments. Both apartments were occupied at the time of the shootings. No injuries were reported, police said.

At this time there is no evidence to suggest that any specific tenants of the complex were targeted, police said. Duval said he believes the shots were random.

Officers conducted welfare checks on the other tenants. The Somersworth Housing Authority was contacted and responded to assess the situation, police said.

Police canvased the neighborhood, speaking with several potential witnesses on Thursday. Police are asking anyone in the area with security systems to check for any vehicles or people around the time of the incident.

The Somersworth Police Department was assisted by the Somersworth Fire Department and Stewart's Ambulance Service.
