Two South Florida restaurants ordered shut, one for 185 live and dead roaches

An infestation of more than 100 live cockroaches crawling near the sushi station and dozens of live flies around the pizza station forced state inspectors to temporarily close two South Florida restaurants last week.

One remains shut — Shima Japanese Restaurant in Hialeah — since May 19 for ongoing roach woes. Inspectors also ordered Vic & Angelo’s in Delray Beach closed for live flies in the kitchen.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel highlights restaurant inspections in Broward and Palm Beach counties from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Here’s how it works: We cull through hundreds of restaurant and bar inspections that happen weekly and spotlight places ordered shut for “high-priority violations,” like improper food temperatures or dead cockroaches. On occasion we may highlight the weirder violations we notice, like this pizzeria that put a dead 80-pound iguana in its freezer.

Sun Sentinel readers can browse full Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade county reports on our state inspection map, updated weekly (usually Monday) with fresh data pulled from the Florida DBPR website.

Any restaurant that fails inspections must stay closed until it passes a follow-up state inspection. If you spotted a possible violation and wish to file a complaint, contact Florida DBPR here. (But don’t contact us: The Sun Sentinel doesn’t inspect restaurants.)

Vic & Angelo’s

290 E. Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach

Ordered shut: May 20 (reopened May 21)

Why: 13 violations (five high-priority), including 64 live flies on the wall, food-prep area, bar, storage and “around the cook line, pizza station and garbage.” Inspectors also ordered the restaurant to stop selling and throw away its pork ragu due to improper food temperatures. Vic & Angelo’s was allowed to reopen May 21 when the state found only minor issues.

Shima Japanese Restaurant

16873 NW 67th Ave., Hialeah

Ordered shut: May 19 (The restaurant remains closed as of May 24.)

Why: There were many reasons, but here’s the biggest: an infestation of 135 live roaches found “crawling on the floor behind the front counter reach-in cooler,” “crawling on clean plates” at the sushi station, on the ceiling and dining-room floor, and “on a preparation table with cooked sushi rice.” At least 50 dead roaches, meanwhile, were spotted on the dining-room floor, on a prep table and “on shelves that hold cooked white rice at the front counter.” Another employee “failed to wash hands” before putting on gloves to handle raw shrimp. The restaurant also was ordered to stop selling and throw away raw shelled eggs for improper food temperatures.

State inspectors kept Shima shut when a May 20 follow-up inspection found the roach problem unresolved. Inspectors spotted 60 dead ones on the dining-room floor and beneath the sushi counter and 135 live ones crawling on the dining-room floor, near the sushi rice and on clean plates. The restaurant, shut since May 19, remains closed pending a follow-up inspection.

Shima’s Instagram page on May 22 acknowledged their closing but not the roach outbreak, and said they are “doing some minor renovations and deep cleaning” and “switching, sweeping and upgrading.” However, their closing is not voluntary.
