Two suffer minor injuries in single-engine plane crash in Ulster County on Sunday

GARDINER - Two people suffered minor injuries when a single-engine plane crashed at Skydive the Ranch in Gardiner Sunday morning.

State police said the crash happened shortly before noon.

Police said the plane, a 1975 Piper Cherokee Six 300, was flying from Westchester County Airport to the ranch. The pilot told police there appeared to be a braking problem and the plane would not stop when he tried to land.

The pilot attempted to climb and try another landing, but as he was ascending, the plane did not gain enough altitude and struck a cable fence at the end of the runway, adjacent to Sand Hill Road.

Police said the plane crossed Sand Hill Road and traveled through a vacant lot, striking trees and rocks before coming to a complete stop.

The pilot and a front-seat passenger suffered minor injuries but did not require medical attention, police said. Two other passengers who were on the plane were not hurt.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified of the crash.

An NTSB spokesman said a preliminary report will be available within two weeks, but the full investigation could take up to a year to complete.
