BURRILLVILLE – Two teenagers are dead after the car they were traveling in veered off the road and slammed into a tree Friday afternoon, according to the police.

The police responded around 3:30 p.m. Friday to the 200 block of Lapham Farm Road for a single car crash with injuries, Burrillville Police Chief Stephen Lynch said in a news release.

The police identified the driver as Andrew Long, 19, of Chestnut Hill Road in Chepachet, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

His passenger was Ariel Welch, 18, of Hillside Drive in Mapleville. Rescue crews took Welch to Rhode Island Hospital, where she later died.

The police say they believe speed was a factor in the crash, though it remains under investigation by the Burrillville and Glocester police departments, as well as the Rhode Island State Police.
