Two Terre Haute artist to speak Friday at Swope

Nov. 13—Two local muralists will speak in two separate presentations Friday at the Swope Art Museum.

Becky Hochhalter, who is completing the city's largest mural on The Terminal at Ninth Street and Wabash Avenue, will speak at noon as part of the Alliance of the Swope monthly meeting. Her talk is open to the public.

At 6 p.m. Friday, Jim Shepard will speak about his recently completed mural that is located on the north outside wall of the Swope in the alley. His talk will be part of the monthly Artist on Art series.

Hochhalter is a Terre Haute native and has been in creative production for 37 years. Her outdoor murals are in several cities, including Paris, Brazil, Spencer, Indianapolis and Terre Haute. Her works have been included in Wabash Valley Exhibitions at the Swope.

She is currently working on a trompe-l'oeil mural on the eastern wall of The Terminal. The intent of the mural is to create an optical illusion that the flat surface is three-dimensional.

Shephard moved back to Terre Haute after a career that included 15 years in the creative department of Disney. He works in several media, including murals. He recently completed the Swope mural which is 8 by 24 feet and is a homage to works in the Swope collection. It was supported by a grant from the Indiana Destination Development Corporation.

Both talks are free and open to the public and will be in the Mary Fendrich Hulman Gallery on the second floor of the Swope Art Museum, 25 S. Seventh St., Terre Haute.
