Two new top-ranked teams highlight our final Iowa high school football rankings for 2022

The 2022 high school football regular season is in the books — and before we embark on the always-exciting postseason, we've got one final set of rankings to take us home.

The Des Moines Register's high school football rankings got one final makeover for 2022, and there are some important changes after Week 9. Most notably, there are two new No. 1-ranked teams, in both of Iowa's largest classes, as the playoffs are set to begin.

In Class 5A, Dowling Catholic is back on top. The Maroons' 43-7 win over Waukee was their eighth-straight this season, all of which came after a season-opening loss to Southeast Polk. Pleasant Valley, which held the No. 1 spot for five weeks, tumbled to No. 4, behind Dowling, Ankeny and Southeast Polk, despite finishing the regular season 9-0.

In Class 4A, Cedar Rapids Xavier leapfrogged Lewis Central for the top spot following a 52-6 win over Oskaloosa, which capped a perfect regular season for the Saints. The Titans, who also finished 9-0 and actually beat Xavier for last year's Class 4A state championship, fell to No. 2 while Waverly-Shell Rock held at No. 3.

Those were the biggest movers in the three large-class polls after Week 9's results.

Class 5A saw a little bit of shuffling, with Cedar Rapids Prairie dropping to No. 10 after a 28-13 loss to Linn-Mar. That moved everybody else up a spot: Cedar Falls to No. 5, Johnston to No. 6, Iowa City High to No. 7, Cedar Rapids Kennedy to No. 8 and Linn-Mar to No. 9.

There was no movement at all in Class 4A, and only a little bit in Class 3A, where ADM jumped to No. 4 after North Polk beat Nevada and both Central DeWitt and Hampton-Dumont-CAL re-entered the poll at Nos. 9 and 10, respectively, after Benton and Creston both lost in Week 9.
