Two Vermont resorts named best in U.S. for fall foliage travel

Looking for a scenic and inviting place to relax between leaf-peeping outings? A recent list named two Vermont resorts among the best in the U.S.

Trips to Discover compiled the list "13 Best Resorts to Visit if You Love Fall Foliage," and a Stowe and Barnard resort made the cut. Colorado and New York were the only other states to have multiple resorts making the list that covered accommodations from New Hampshire to Wyoming.

The criteria were hotels that "offer a luxury stay with picture-perfect fall foliage views," according to the article from Sept. 23.

Topnotch Resort in Stowe was featured for its views, hiking opportunities, fitness and spa.

"In the autumn, enjoy hiking hillside trails with spectacular vistas of the landscape blanketed with fiery reds, golden yellows and vivid orange hues and then hitting the resort’s 35,000-square-foot mega-spa to soothe those sore muscles," the article reads.

Topnotch is surrounded by 120 acres of woodland property at the base of Mt. Mansfield and offers horseback riding and tennis lessons. Dogs were welcome as of Sept. 26 and Vermonters could get a free spa treatment each night, a $50 credit for the on-site restaurant and reduced resort fees.

The other resort featured was Twin Farms in Barnard.

The article called Twin Farms one of the world's best adults-only all inclusive resorts and singled it out for its abundant outdoor activities, farm-to-table dining and luxurious cottage accommodations.

"The property is set on 300 acres, providing the ultimate playground for grownups with six trails for hiking and biking, a pond for kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding, and activities like ax throwing and archery," the article reads. "Everything is included in the rates, with meals featuring made-to-order Vermont breakfasts and a farm-to-table dinner, with fine wines and spirits at any time of the day."

The accommodations include 20 living spaces, most of which have been individually designed. They are comprised of 10 free-standing cottages with fireplaces and screened porches, four suites with private entrances in the farmhouse, two suites in the lodge and four rooms in the main house, according to the website.

Six of the 13 properties listed were from New England and New York.
