Two victims in I-74 accident have been identified, according to police

Two people were killed Oct. 7 while standing in the roadway after an early morning crash on I-74 east of Goodfield.

Killed were Brian Griffin, 28, of Bloomington, and Leishani Gonzalez, 23, of Lockport. Gonzalez was a producer at WEEK-TV. She had just graduated from Illinois State University in 2022, according to WEEK.

Griffin and Gonzalez were involved in a two-vehicle crash that happened at about 1:24 a.m. when a Toyota sedan rear-ended a Mercury SUV near milepost 116 in Woodford County, according to Illinois State Police, which responded to both accidents.

The vehicles were still in the traffic lane when the occupants of both cars exited their vehicles. They were standing in the roadway near their vehicles when a Chevrolet sedan failed to stop and struck the Toyota and the two pedestrians.

Both victims were pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the Chevrolet was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The road was closed until 8:15 a.m. to allow officers to investigate the accident scene.
