Two Washington County roads near Harpers Ferry closed due to rain over the weekend

Two Washington County roads remain closed after thunderstorms moved through Maryland during the 4th of July weekend, and there's a chance for additional flooding Tuesday night.

Debris clean-up has begun on Millers Sawmill and Canal roads, Danielle Weaver, director of public relations and marketing for the county, told The Herald-Mail in an email. The roads are off Harpers Ferry Road south of Sharpsburg.

On July 3, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park posted on its Facebook page that there was "extensive storm damage," including fallen trees, branches and washouts, along the towpath and other parts of the park.

Weaver said the roads still had standing water on them Tuesday, and there is potential for additional flooding Tuesday night as the county is expected to see more rain.

As of 2 p.m. on Tuesday, a chance of a few light showers and thunderstorms is expected overnight, with stronger storms expected east of the county, according to a National Weather Service representative.
