Two women killed, a third seriously hurt in SR 40 East crash in Ocala National Forest

SILVER SPRINGS — Two women were killed in a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon on State Road 40 East.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the women were ages 63 and 57. They were friends and lived in Silver Springs. The patrol no longer provides names in its news releases.

The other vehicle was driven by a 19-year-old woman from DeLand.

All three women were taken to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital after the crash. The 19-year-old woman was listed in serious condition.

This is how the fatal crash happened

According to troopers, the two women were in an older model Hyundai Elantra that was eastbound on SR 40. The 19-year-old woman, behind the wheel of a Jeep Liberty, was westbound.

Both vehicles were in a curve in the roadway just west of Northeast 14th Street Road. For an unknown reason, the Hyundai drifted into the Jeep's lane and the two vehicles collided, troopers said.

Marion County Fire Rescue spokesman James Lucas said his agency received the call at 1:30 p.m. and arrived at 1:39 p.m.

The crash occurred less than a mile east of County Road 314A. Although troopers do not believe speed was a factor, they said it will be an element considered in their investigation.
