Two women killed in wrong-way crash on Crosstown Expressway identified

Two women killed in a wrong way crash on Crosstown Expressway early Friday morning have been identified.

Around 2 a.m., officers responded to a crash on State Highway 286 near Morgan Avenue. Officers found the driver of one vehicle was dead. The other driver was trapped inside the vehicle. She was pulled out of her vehicle and later died of her injuries, Senior Officer Gena Pena said.

The women were identified by the Nueces County Medical Examiner's office as 28-year-old Crystal Pineda and 18-year-old Ariana Dewey.

Police believe the 28-year-old woman was driving the wrong direction on SH 286 at a high rate of speed when her vehicle collided with the 18-year-old woman's vehicle.

Pena said the 28-year-old is believed to be at fault for the crash. It has not been determined if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
