Two workers die under construction rubble at JFK Airport

Two construction workers died at JFK International Airport on Monday, according to a statement from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The agency said the two men died shortly after 11 a.m., trapped under construction rubble. "A stop order for all construction at JFK has been issued," the agency said. "The Port Authority is conducting a thorough investigation and will be cooperating with all other investigative agencies."

The bi-state agency, which oversees the region's three largest airports — JFK, LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport — has at least $18 billion in construction planned or ongoing at JFK. Work at Terminal 1 at JFK Airport began in 2022, and planning will continue at three other JFK terminals, including renovations and expansions at Terminal 4, Terminal 8 and Terminal 6.

The workers were employed by Triumph Construction and were relocating utility lines near a cogeneration plant to support the increased energy needs of the JFK redevelopment project, a spokesman said.

This is a breaking news story, it will be updated.
