Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) reiterated his support for abortion rights on ABC’s The View on Tuesday. O’Rourke’s appearance followed on the heels of the pro-choice rally he held in Houston in response to the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion signaling the Court would overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark case establishing a woman’s constitutional right to have an abortion.
O’Rourke stated on the show that 5,000 people attended the rally "to stand up for every woman's right to make her own decisions about her own body, her own future, and our own health care.”
O’Rourke added that this wasn’t the first time Texas women have shown their support for abortion rights. He reminded the panel that “Jane Roe” – whose real name is Norma McCorvey – was a Texan as well as Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee, the two attorneys who filed the lawsuit on Roe’s behalf.
“So it wasn't women in Texas waiting for someone to come from outside to save them. It was women of Texas standing up fighting for their rights and winning them,” O’Rourke said. “We're going to do that again,” he added.
