Ty Beeman, driver in crash that killed Waverly senior Peyton Shaw, now in stable condition

The condition of the driver in a motor vehicle crash that killed a Waverly High School student has been upgraded, according to a social media post by Mansfield University.

Peyton Shaw, 17, a standout athlete and senior at Waverly High School, died from her injuries in Tuesday's crash on West Danby Road in the Tompkins County Town of Newfield.

Dale T. "Ty" Beeman, 18, of Spencer, was identified by New York State Police as the driver of a Toyota Yaris that rear-ended a stopped Jeep Patriot and then went into oncoming traffic and was struck by a Cadillac CT6.

Shaw, a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Beeman was transported by helicopter to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. with serious injuries, troopers said.

Beeman was listed as critical Wednesday morning, but his status has improved and he is now in stable condition, according to a statement posted by Mansfield University Athletics on X, formerly Twitter, and other social media sites.

Beeman is a freshman catcher with the Mountaineers baseball program, according to the university.

"We extend heartfelt wishes for a full and quick recovery for Ty Beeman," Mansfield Athletics said in the X post, continuing, "Our hearts are with Peyton's family and friends during this difficult time."

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe drive to support the Beeman family had raised nearly $23,000 of a $25,000 goal by early Friday afternoon. A similar campaign to support the Shaw family had exceeded its $30,000 goal, raising nearly $34,000 from over 400 donors.
