Ty-Laur Johnson, 4-star point guard, decommits from Memphis basketball

Four-star point guard Ty-Laur Johnson has decommitted from the Memphis basketball program, according to Cerebro Sports recruiting insider Andrew Slater.

Johnson, the No. 70 recruit in the Class of 2023 (according to 247 Sports Composite), pledged to Memphis in November 2022, choosing Penny Hardaway's program over Seton Hall and NC State. But the Our Saviour Lutheran (Bronx, N.Y.) did not sign during the early period.

Six months later, Johnson is off the Tigers' board. Memphis had assembled the fifth-ranked recruiting class in the country. But, last month, 3-star wing David Tubek decommitted (and has since committed to Seton Hall) and, now, Johnson is headed elsewhere. Ryan Forrest, a 3-star guard, remains committed to Memphis, but he has not formally signed with the Tigers. Those high school prospects who already have signed with Memphis include 5-star guard Mikey Williams, 4-star forward JJ Taylor, 4-star wing Ashton Hardaway and 4-star guard Carl Cherenfant.

The Tigers' roster will feature a much different look in 2023-24. Johnson's decommitment comes the same day that shooting guard Johnathan Lawson entered the transfer portal. Jayden Hardaway and Chandler Lawson are expected to return for another season. But since Memphis' season ended in March, Keonte Kennedy, Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu, Ian Granja and Jahmar Young Jr. have announced their respective departures. That is in addition to the losses of Kendric Davis, DeAndre Williams, Alex Lomax, Elijah McCadden and Damaria Franklin.

Memphis has signed transfers Caleb Mills, Teafale Lenard Jr., Jonathan Pierre and Nick Jourdain.
