Ty Law has harsh criticism of Patriots defense after recent struggles originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

The New England Patriots defense has been carved up over the last two weeks, particularly against the pass.

First it was Texans rookie quarterback Davis Mills throwing for 312 yards and three touchdowns in a Week 5 loss to the Patriots. Next it was Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott throwing for 445 yards with three touchdowns and an interception as part of a 35-29 overtime win in Week 6.

Both matchups included the Patriots secondary getting burned by big scoring plays, including a 35-yard game-winning touchdown catch by Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb in OT.

Patriots legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Ty Law was asked about New England's 2021 defense in an interview with WEEI's "The Greg Hill Show" on Tuesday, and the former cornerback had some harsh criticism for the unit.

“Defense, they have to step up,” Law said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen in this offseason. I can tell you right now, if I had a vote, we’d be going first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth round -- we’re getting all defensive guys and we’re going to get some wide receivers and running backs as free agents because something’s got to give with the defense.”

“I’m really upset about what’s going on because you don’t let people come in there and walk all over you and throw the ball like that anytime they want to. I mean, that’s shameful.”

Law also talked about the Patriots' issues in the secondary.

"You have to have somebody who can cover," he explained. "We were looking for (J.C.) Jackson to step up, he's been playing pretty good football but I didn't want to pass him the mantle just yet when we're talking about him compared to Stephon Gilmore. But you have to have guys in the back who can step up and make plays."

Law isn't the first former Patriots star to criticize the team's defense this season. Rodney Harrison called the Patriots linebackers "slow" during an interview with WEEI's "Merloni and Fauria" earlier this month.

The Patriots defense has a fairly easy matchup in Week 7 against the New York Jets and their rookie quarterback Zach Wilson, who New England intercepted four times during a Week 2 win. But if the Patriots are going to reach the playoffs, the defense has to show considerable improvement, especially in the secondary.
