Typhoon Hagibis passed by Japan’s Chichijima Island on October 10 and 11, bringing rain and winds to the small outlying island.

This footage shows debris in the roads and waves churned up by the storm.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued special heavy rain warnings in the five prefectures of Ibaraki, Tochigi, Niigata, Fukushima and Miyagi. Warnings had earlier been issued for Tokyo and the central and eastern prefectures of Shizuoka, Kanagawa, Saitama, Gunma, Yamanashi and Nagano. The JMA also said there was a risk of landslides, and encouraged people to evacuate to higher ground.

Chichijima Island is part of Tokyo prefecture.

Typhoon Hagibis was expected to bring heavy rainfall and possible mudslides mirroring 1958’s Typhoon Ida, which left 888 people dead and 381 missing, NHK and The Japan Times reported. Credit: keroza emon via Storyful
