Methodology: GOBankingRates determined the average monthly and annual costs of senior care in every state by analyzing costs for six different categories: (1) homemaker services, (2) home health aide, (3) adult day healthcare, (4) assisted living facility, (5) semiprivate room with nursing home care, (6) private room with nursing home care. All data was sourced from Genworth’s Cost of Care Survey 2018.
Definitions: (1) By helping individuals complete household tasks that they can’t manage alone, homemaker services make it possible for people to live in their own homes or return to their homes. Aides may clean house, cook meals or run errands. (2) Home health aides help those who live in their own homes instead of residential care facilities. Home health aides may offer care to people who need more extensive personal care than family or friends are able to provide. (3) Adult day healthcare can offer a break to caregivers. This type of care provides services at a community-based center for adults who need assistance or supervision during the day but not round-the-clock care. The centers may provide health services, therapeutic services and social activities. (4) Assisted living facilities (referred to as residential care facilities in California) are living arrangements that provide personal care and health services for people who may need assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs). The level of care provided is not as extensive as that which may be provided in a nursing home. Assisted living is an intermediate level of long-term care, not an alternative to a nursing home. (5-6) Nursing home care is for people who may need a higher level of supervision and care than what may be provided in an assisted living facility. Nursing homes offer personal care, room and board, supervision, medication, therapies and rehabilitation, as well as skilled nursing care, 24 hours a day.
