Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu will play Sunday in the AFC Championship against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Chiefs confirmed with a tweet Sunday afternoon.

Mathieu was on the practice field Friday for the second consecutive day ahead of Sunday's AFC Championship against the Bengals. But Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Mathieu remains in concussion protocol.

"The Badger, Tyrann (Mathieu), he's still in the (concussion) protocol," Reid said Friday. "But he did practice today, and we think he'll be ready to roll here in a day or so. But we'll find out. We'll see tomorrow."

Mathieu would need clearance from an independent doctor to play in Kansas City.

Mathieu did not practice Wednesday. Mathieu was injured during the Chiefs' Divisional Round win against the Buffalo Bills.

"He's doing very well. We'll just see how he does tomorrow," Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Wednesday, per Chiefs.com's Matt McMullen. "There's a chance, if everything works out, that he'll be able to get back."

Mathieu started all 16 games in which he played for the Chiefs during the regular season. He made six tackles in Kansas City's 34-31 loss to the Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium earlier this month.

Mathieu is in his third season with Kansas City and ninth in the NFL. He was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft, six picks after former Cincinnati Bearcats standout and current Chiefs teammate Travis Kelce.
