Tyrell Malacia will become the first signing of Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United reign after agreeing a five-year deal with the Premier League club.

The 22-year-old left-back, a long-term replacement for Luke Shaw, will undergo a medical and complete the formalities over the move from Feyenoord, possibly as early as this weekend.

His signing, on a four-year contract with a club option for an extra season, will mark a successful end to United’s late intervention in pursuit of the full-back, who appeared destined for French side Lyon at the start of the week.

But United outbid their rivals, agreeing a fee of around £13 million for the Dutch international.

Despite Malacia changing agents late in proceedings, United were able to conclude negotiations late on Friday to make him the first new arrival under Ten Hag’s tenure.

It means the deal is concluded well in advance of United leaving for their pre-season tour to Thailand and Australia.

It also ends what had so far been a frustrating summer in the transfer market for United who, for the first time since 2010, had reached the end of June without having made a signing in the summer window.

Talks with Malacia’s countryman Frenkie de Jong are still dragging on, with a fee that could rise as high as £73.2 million having been agreed with Barcelona.

Sources at both ends of the deal claim that talks are progressing well although United have yet to start discussing personal terms with the Dutch international.

Those discussions are not expected to be problematic and United hope that they may have the deal finalised soon.

De Jong, who made a brief substitute appearance for Ajax as a 20-year-old against United in the 2017 Europa League final, blossomed under Ten Hag when he took over the Dutch giants later that year.

And the new United manager has identified him as the solution to one of the biggest areas of concern in United’s under-achieving squad; central midfield.
