Tyson Foods announced this week that it is recalling thousands of pounds of ready-to-eat chicken fritter products after consumers reportedly found hard plastic in the food.

More than 190,000 pounds of frozen chicken are affected by the recall, much of which the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service is concerned could be in freezers at food service locations, according to a news release.

The product is only available commercially – not through retail stores – and was produced Feb. 28. Tyson said no other products have been affected.

The poultry giant stated the recall is voluntary and out of caution. Though the consumer reports were limited to information from three people, the USDA classified the recall as a "high health risk," with "reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death."

Federal inspectors were notified of the problem June 5, when Tyson Foods Inc. advised FSIS of the complaints about the breaded chicken fritters. Tyson Foods said the products were distributed to various "institutions," including schools.

Those who purchased the chicken products are urged to throw them away and not to serve them.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of the chicken, the USDA said, and anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a health care provider.

The recalled chicken carried the following label: 32.81-lb. cases containing four 8.2-lb. bags of “FULLY COOKED, WHOLE GRAIN GOLDEN CRISPY CHICKEN CHUNK FRITTERS-CN” and case code 0599NHL02
