U.S. aircraft flies into eye of possibly 'catastrophic' Hurricane Delta

The Category 4 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of intensity was about 215 miles (345 km) east of Cozumel off the Mexican coast, packing maximum sustained winds of 140 miles per hour (220 kph), the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Video footage from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) showed aircraft reconnaissance operations to investigate the location and strength of Delta's circulation.

According to the NOAA, the video showed a small ete and a turbulent ride as the aircraft entered the eyewall of the storm, with three onboard radars helping to navigate and measure the storm.
