U.S. Attorney to announce federal charges in Lakeland mass shooting

LAKELAND — U.S. Attorney Robert Handberg will announce federal charges related to Lakeland's mass shooting on North Iowa Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.

The U.S. Attorney's Office has called a press conference for 1 p.m. Wednesday to provide an update on the Jan. 30 drive-by shooting that occurred on the 900 block of North Iowa Avenue, north of the intersection with Plum Street. Injured in the shooting were 11 people, with two left in critical condition. Police said four men in a dark blue Nissan Altima with paper tags rolled down tinted windows and opened fire on both sides of the street. Witnesses told police the vehicle then sped north before turning east on Memorial Boulevard.

Lakeland police located and secured the vehicle in west Lakeland within 24 hours of the shooting. The vehicle and evidence found inside was being processed by the department with help from the FBI, Homeland Security, Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Polk County Sheriff's Office.

One of the shooting suspects, Alex Greene, 21, of Eagle Lake, died last week after leading police officers on a vehicular pursuit through Winter Haven. No other information about potential suspects or arrests has been released since last week. The Ledger has previously asked Lakeland Police Department if officers were looking into the firearms and items found in some of the personal vehicles used to transport shooting victims to the hospital. The department declined to answer citing an active and ongoing investigation.
