U.S. blocks $105 mln in aid to Lebanon: sources

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration is blocking more than $100 million dollars in security aid to Lebanon.

That's according to two official sources, who exclusively told Reuters that the State Department made the announcement to Congress on Thursday (October 31).

So far, no hints as to why the White House made the decision

But, Washington has expressed concern about the growing influence of Hezbollah in the Beirut government.

The armed Shi'ite group is backed by Iran.

The U.S. considers it a terrorist organization.

The aid includes things like night vision goggles and weapons used in border security.

Back in May, the Trump administration had argued in favor of assistance, saying the U.S. partner needed help protecting its borders.

But now, no news on when or if the aid will be released.

One U.S. official told Reuters that withholding security assistance could pave the way for Russia to move in.

He also said the aid was "necessary" as Lebanon struggles with turmoil in the region and at home.

The country has been racked by huge protests against the ruling elite.

Under pressure, Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri resigned earlier this week.
