U.S. demands immediate start to WHO review

The United States is demanding that the World Health Organization begin work immediately on investigating both the source of the novel coronavirus and its handling of the response to the pandemic.

Earlier this week, President Trump threatened in a tweeted letter to the WHO's director general to permanently halt funding to the United Nations agency if it did not commit to reforms within 30 days -- and to reconsider his country's membership.

Trump accuses the agency of being 'China centic'.

On Friday Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus defended their actions.

"Since the begnning of the pandemic WHO has worked day and night to co-ordinate the global response at all three levels of the organisation."

More than 5.1 million cases of COVID-19 have been reported worldwide - with over 300,000 deaths.

The virus emerged in the central Chinese city of Wuhan late last year.
