U.S. DOT Secretary Buttigieg to visit Sioux Falls, Chamberlain, Salem early next week

The U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary will visit parts of eastern South Dakota next week, according to a press release from the DOT office.

United States Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg speaks Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023, outside Cummins Indianapolis Distribution Headquarters in downtown Indy. Buttigieg made several stops in Indiana to highlight infrastructure investments the Biden administration has made. During his speech, Buttigieg commended a $46.5 million city project that is partially federally funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The project, which is at least two years away from beginning, will reconfigure and improve to downtown roads for safety and efficiency.

Secretary Pete Buttigieg will visit South Dakota to discuss federal infrastructure projects, such as long-haul truck parking investments. Buttigieg, a former Democratic presidential candidate, will visit Chamberlain on Monday and Sioux Falls and Salem on Tuesday.

"Secretary Buttigieg will visit a major I-90 improvement project that includes new truck parking spaces and is funded by the Biden-Harris Administration," according the U.S. Department of Transportation's news release sent Thursday. "While in South Dakota, the Secretary will also see other infrastructure investments and will announce additional critical investments in highway safety, all made possible by President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law."

Buttigieg is also expected to announce additional investments in highway safety during his visit, according to the release.

The secretary will be joined by state, local and tribal leaders throughout his visit, according to the release.
