U of I Ebert Center reveals spring event lineup

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The University of Illinois’ Roger Ebert Center for Film Studies has announced its spring event lineup, promising several free screenings, discussions, and workshops throughout the semester.

“From thought-provoking discussions to immersive cinematic experiences, our programming reflects our commitment to celebrating the rich diversity of voices in the world of cinema. We invite film enthusiasts and community members alike to join us as we embark on this exciting journey together,” said Angela Aguayo, Acting Director of the Roger Ebert Center for Film Studies and Associate Professor of Media and Cinema Studies.

Here are the upcoming Ebert Center events:

February

Oscar-Worthy Features Screening: “Poor Things”

  • Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.

  • Knight Auditorium, Spurlock Museum, 600 South Gregory Street, Urbana

  • “Poor Things” is a feminist spin on the Frankenstein story. The 2023 film was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and nominated for 11 Academy Awards.

Fright Night Screening: “Train to Busan”

  • Feb. 29 at 7 p.m.

  • Knight Auditorium, Spurlock Museum, 600 South Gregory Street, Urbana

  • “Train to Busan” is a 2016 South Korean horror film, directed by Yeon Sang-ho. The story follows a man and his daughter traveling on a train from Seoul to Busan as a zombie infection spreads.

Women’s History Screening: “Ovarian Psycos”

  • March 21 at 7 p.m.

  • Knight Auditorium, Spurlock Museum, 600 South Gregory Street, Urbana

  • “Ovarian Psycos” is a 2016 documentary about an unapologetic bicycle brigade. The film was directed by Joanna Sokolowski and Kate Trumbull-LaValle.

Discussion: Women Make Movies

  • March 22 from 3 – 4 p.m.

  • Women’s Resources Center, 616 East Green Street, Suite #202, Champaign

  • A day after screening “Ovarian Psycos,” a conversation will be held centering around the film and its themes of precarity, collaboration, and claiming space. This discussion is made in partnership with the Women’s Resources Center.

Ebert Fellows Curated Film Screening: “Portrait of a Lady on Fire”

  • April 4 at 7 p.m.

  • Knight Auditorium, Spurlock Museum, 600 South Gregory Street, Urbana

  • “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” is a 2019 film directed by Céline Sciamma and curated by this year’s Roger Ebert Fellows. The film follows an eighteenth-century woman who is asked to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman who has just left the convent.
