U-Haul plans to open new moving and storage facility in SLO County. Here’s when

U-Haul is opening a new retail, moving and self-storage facilityin San Luis Obispo.

The company announced Tuesday it has acquired 4.03 acres of land at 1109 Kendall Road, where it hopes to build a new U-Haul Moving & Storage facility.

According to a news release, preliminary plans call for a multi-story self-storage building including at least 700 indoor, ADA-accessible units with climate-control options and high-tech security features.

It will also feature a retail showroom and mobility services, offering towing equipment, boxes, moving supplies, trailer and truck rentals and more, the release said.

U-Haul plans to build a separate warehouse for portable moving containers.

“Expanding our self-storage footprint along the Central Coast of California is important to us,” Firoz Bari, president of U-Haul Company of Van Nuys and San Luis Obispo, said in the release. “Being located halfway between the Bay Area and Los Angeles, communities like SLO are attracting residents and we need to grow our services to follow demand.”

The business is expected open in 2025, according to the release.

Ahead of that date, the company said, it will likely hire about 15 employees to staff the new store.

According to the release, U-Haul actively recruits military veterans and gives them preference in the hiring process.

“Bringing quality jobs to SLO is one of our top priorities,” Bari said. “U-Haul is thankful for this opportunity to be part of the city’s development and long-term future.”
