PETOSKEY — Dr. David Roland Finley, president of North Central Michigan College, will present “Innovations in Higher Education” as the first Lunch & Learn event of the summer, presented by the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Little Traverse Bay.

Finley will be joined by Christy Lyons, NCMC Dean of Corporate and Community Education.

Finley and Lyons, both University of Michigan graduates, will speak at noon on Wednesday, July 19 at the Petoskey Bay View Country Club. The lunch is open to the public. Cost is $40, which includes lunch, with proceeds benefitting the Glen and Linn Williams Scholarship Fund. Scholarships are awarded annually to incoming University of Michigan students from the Little Traverse Bay region.

Finley said the Lunch & Learn will cover “the launch of intercollegiate athletics, accreditation of our highly-regarded nursing program, and especially the new, groundbreaking Fast Track Career Programs, which lead to an industrial credential and prepare students to launch a career in four to 24 weeks.”

The two will also share planning for 2024 and beyond at North Central.

Registration closes on Monday, July 17 for the luncheon. Register online at alumni.umich.edu/communities-clubs/little-traverse-bay.

The local alumni club is also planning other summer events:

  • The second summer Lunch & Learn in August will feature renowned University of Michigan women’s softball coach Carol Hutchins, the winningest coach in NCAA softball history. Hutchins wrapped up her career in 2022 with a career record 1,707-551-5 over 39 total seasons. She is the winningest coach – male or female – in Michigan Athletics history. The date and location of this event will be announced soon.

  • The annual scholarship picnic will be held on Monday, Aug. 7 for incoming U-M freshmen. This free picnic will take place at 5:30 p.m. in East Park. Incoming freshmen and their families will receive invitations via email. U-M alumni in the area are invited to attend. Students are randomly selected to receive $500 scholarships. Attendance at the picnic is required to receive a scholarship award. RSVPs are appreciated and can be made on the club’s website.

The local alumni club hosts a couple fall events as well, including a football game watch party at Camp Michigania and a Crying Towel event with Michigan State University football fans. Dates will be announced soon.
