U of I med students now offer free women’s healthcare

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Champaign-Urbana women now have access to a free women’s health clinic, thanks to the help of University of Illinois med students.

Volunteer med students with the university are working with Dr. Christine Chien and Dr. Ifeanyirochukwu Opoku to launch Avicenna’s Women’s Health Clinic with free obstetrics and gynecological care for women who are under-insured or uninsured. They hope to offer services to women with limited options.

Some of the services they offer include gynecological evaluations, breast exams, cervical cancer screening, and testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections and urinary tract infections.

“Offering these free services on the weekend makes health care accessible when it is needed the most,” Women’s Health Clinic co-director Billianne Schultz said.

The clinic will also work on outreach in the community and help provide educational materials.

“This holistic approach ensures that women not only have access to essential health care services but also gain valuable knowledge about women’s health,” Schultz said.

The student-run clinic launched in December and is now open one Sunday a month. The co-directors said in a release they hope to expand services with more physicians and more dates open.

More information on the clinic, including dates open and a full range of services they provide, can be found on Avicenna’s website.

Avicenna officials ask for any women interested in those services to make an appointment on their website or by calling 309-306-1358.
