U.S. Men’s National Team will play Copa America match at Arrowhead Stadium in 2024
As Kansas City continues to prepare to host World Cup matches in 2026, the city and GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium will get a dry run this summer.
Kansas City was named a host city for the 2024 Copa America on Monday afternoon, receiving two group-stage matches, one featuring the United States Men’s National Team on July 1 at Arrowhead.
Children’s Mercy Park, home of Sporting KC, will also host a match on June 25. That match will feature two teams from Group A. The U.S. team is in Group C.
While the opponent for the USMNT has not been named, that info will be learned in short order, with the Copa America draw taking place Thursday. That match will be the U.S. team’s group-play finale, as they’ll face one of Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
The U.S. Men’s National Team is currently ranked No. 12 in the FIFA rankings and has never lost in Kansas City, holding a record of 10-0-2.
The Children’s Mercy Park match will feature teams from Group A, specifically A2, and A4. That means one of the aforementioned opponent group — Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru — will play in that match, as will either Jamaica, Bolovia or one of the winners between Canada vs. Trinidad and Tobago and Honduras vs. Costa Rica
The Copa America is one of the oldest international competitions in the world. It typically features members of South America’s soccer federation, CONMEBOL, with a few invites to other associations on occasion, like with Mexico and the United States.
“We will experience an unforgettable Copa America, enjoying the best football in the world in 14 magnificent stadiums,” said Alejandro Dominguez, president of CONMEBOL and FIFA vice president, in a release.
“The passion of football will run through this great country from east to west and from north to south, bringing excitement and fun to hundreds of thousands of fans at the venues and millions of spectators around the world.”
Arrowhead and Children’s Mercy Park made a list of fourteen venues around the United States that will host matches. Children’s Mercy Park is one of three stadiums built specifically for MLS teams that will host matches, joining Austin’s Q2 Stadium and Orlando’s Exploria Stadium.
Arrowhead is one of the 11 larger venues, joining Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Levi’s Stadium in the Bay Area, Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, NRG Stadium in Houston, So-Fi Stadium in Inglewood, California, and State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
Next summer will mark the fifth time the United States has participated in the Copa America. They have taken fourth place twice and have been knocked out of the group stage twice. It’s also the second time the United States has hosted the tournament.
The 2016 Copa America Centenario — the 100th anniversary of the competition — was held in venues throughout the United States, and the USMNT finished fourth after losing to Argentina in the semifinal round.
