U.N. outlines steps to halt shelling on Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

STORY: U.N. Secretary General António Guterres on Tuesday (September 6) provided steps for Russia and Ukraine to halt any military activity near the Zaporizhzhia power plant.

"Zaporizhzhia facility and its surroundings must not be a target or a platform for military operations," Guterres added.

Guterres also urged the countries to agree on a demilitarized perimeter. Specifically, for Russian forces to withdrawal from the area and for Ukrainian forces not to move into it.

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station is Europe's largest nuclear power plant. Both sides in the war have accused each other of risking nuclear catastrophe by shelling near the plant in southern Ukraine, captured by Russia but still operated by Ukrainian engineers.
