The Austin school district’s Liberal Arts and Science Academy was once again ranked as one of the best high schools in Texas, according to the 2022 list of top public high schools ranked by U.S. News & World Report.

The annual list from U.S. News ranks schools based on factors such as graduation rates, how students perform on state assessments, the proportion of 12th graders who get qualifying scores on Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exams and the performance of Black, Hispanic and low-income students.

LASA, a public magnet high school in Austin, maintained its status from last year as the highest-ranked school in the city and fourth overall in Texas. But the school jumped in the national rankings from the No. 41 spot in 2021 to become the No. 34 public high school in the United States.

U.S. News evaluated 24,000 public high schools from across the country and ranked 1,481 schools in the state, including 14 from the Austin school district. This year, U.S. News had to adjust some calculations because many state exams were canceled in spring 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

"The Best High Schools rankings take a comprehensive approach to evaluating schools," said Eric Brooks, principal data analyst at U.S. News. "Looking at factors like graduation rates and underserved student performance, families can use this information to learn more about their local schools."

Two other schools from the Austin area were ranked among the top 20 best public high schools in the state. Chaparral Star Academy, a charter school, ranked No. 16 in Texas and No. 122 in the U.S., and the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders, an all-girls college preparatory school, ranked No. 20 in Texas and No. 128 in the nation.

LASA also ranked as No. 70 nationwide among STEM high schools, or schools with a “robust curriculum of college-level math and science courses,” while Chaparral Star Academy was ranked as the No. 30 charter school in the U.S.

The top three ranked schools in Texas were The School for the Talented and Gifted (No. 8 overall), Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School (No. 20 overall) and the Science and Engineering Magnet School (No. 22 overall) — all of which are in Dallas.

The highest-ranked school nationwide was Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, a magnet school in Alexandria, Va.
