U.S. News & World Report best high schools list is out. Here's how Athens area schools rank

Five Athens area high schools ranked in the top 100 best public high schools in Georgia, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report ranking.

North Oconee High School in Bogart ranked No. 23, while Oconee County High School in Watkinsville ranked closely behind at No. 27. Both schools ranked among the top 1,000 schools in the nation.

Clarke Central High School ranked outside of the top 100 at No. 110 but ranked No. 73 in "College Readiness Index Rank," which takes into account the proportions of seniors who took and passed at least one Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exam.

Cedar Shoals High School ranked No. 223 in the state.

The ranking, which only included public high schools, take into account metrics such as graduation rate, college preparedness, opportunity for Advanced Placement courses and state testing scores. To see the full methodology, go to the ranking's FAQ page.

Other Athens area school that ranked in the top 100 include Jefferson High School (No. 35), East Jackson Comprehensive School (No. 59) and Commerce High School (No. 93.)
