U.S. News & World Report names top high schools in Ohio: See who made the grade

Six Summit County high schools were among the top 100 in Ohio, with Hudson High School topping the list at 19th in the state and 540th in the nation, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings of top public high schools in the country.

Other Summit County schools in the top 100 statewide include Revere High School (23), Twinsburg High School (57), Green High School (63), Akron STEM High School (77) and Copley High School (85).

In Medina County, Highland High School in Medina ranked 29th and Wadsworth High School in Wadsworth ranked 81st in the state.

In Stark County, Jackson High School was ranked 50th in the state, Hoover was ranked 56th and Lake was ranked 69th.

Aurora High School was the only Portage County school in the top 100, ranking 18th in Ohio.

The state's 100th ranked school, Boardman High School, is ranked 2,703 nationally.

U.S. News ranked 17,860 public high schools out of nearly 25,000 it reviewed. It ranked 741 public high schools in Ohio.

The rankings were released Tuesday.

Factors in the rankings include students' readiness for college, breadth of college and advanced course offerings, how well underserved students perform, graduation rate and state test scores. Many of these factors can correlate with the demographics of the school and the level of wealth in the community supporting the school. Schools with higher housing values draw more money from levies that can support additional college classes, for example.

Akron high schools ranked

While Akron STEM High School was the top-ranked out of the city's nine high schools (2,110 nationally), three other Akron high schools were listed in the state's top rankings: Firestone was second in the city school district and 110th in the state; Akron Early College High School was third in the city and 162th in the state; and Ellet was fourth in the city and 425th in the state.

  3. Mariemont in Cincinnati

  4. Indian Hill in Cincinnati

  5. Wyoming High in Wyoming

The Early College at Guilford in North Carolina was ranked as the No. 1 public high school in the U.S.

This year, U.S. News adjusted its calculations to account for the cancellation of state testing in spring 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Without the assessment data for the 2019-2020 year, U.S. News incorporated assessment results from both 2018-2019 and 2020-2021.
