U. S. News & World Report came out with its high school rankings for the 2023-2024 school year and named Boston Latin School as the top high school in Massachusetts, followed by the Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School in Hadley. The Bromfield School, the public high school for the town of Harvard, is ranked as the state's third-best high school.

Admission to the Boston Latin School is in seventh and ninth grade only. Admission requirements include a test, grade level work and a B average. It is one of three exam schools in Boston, and students must live in the city to attend the school.

As a charter school, admission to the Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School is by lottery. Siblings of currently enrolled students are given priority over other students in the lottery ranking.
