U.S. News & World Report releases 23-24 high school rankings: How Norwich area schools did
U. S. News & World Report came out with its high school rankings for the 2023-2024 school year and named Marine Science Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut in Groton as the state’s top high school, followed by Staples High School in Westport.
Marine Science Magnet High School is ranked #211 in the nation according to the magazine, which uses a methodology that incorporates six measures of academic achievement and performance: college readiness, college curriculum breadth, state assessment proficiency, state assessment performance, underserved student performance, and graduation rate. Staples High School was ranked #240 nationally.
The methodology distills the six measures into a score between 0 and 100.
Admission to the Marine Science Magnet school is by lottery. Eighth-grade students who are residents of the state are eligible to apply for admission in the ninth grade. There is no exam. The school website indicates that a few students are accepted as sophomores, but there are no junior or senior transfers accepted.
Here is how local schools are ranked:
Norwich Free Academy: #121 in CT and #5,902 nationwide.
Killingly High School: #128 in CT and #6,491 nationwide.
Plainfield High School: #146 in CT and #9,460 nationally.
Griswold High School: ranked #148 in CT and #9,542 nationwide.
Both Norwich Technical High School and H.H. Ellis Technical School have calculated scores of less than 25, which places them in the range of #171-198 in CT.
