U.S. News & World Report releases annual school rankings: Here's where Marion landed
U.S. News & World Report recently announced its rankings for elementary, middle and high schools nationwide. Here's a look at the Marion County picture:
TOP 5 MARION COUNTY ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
Madison Street Academy of Visual and Performing Arts (No. 49 statewide.)
Dr N H Jones Elementary School
Eighth Street Elementary School
Shady Hill Elementary School
Saddlewood Elementary School
TOP 5 MARION COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOLS
Osceola Middle School (No. 404 statewide)
Belleview Middle School
Howard Middle School
Dunnellon Middle School
Horizon Academy at Marion Oaks
According to the magazine website, when it comes to ranking K-8 schools, "the rankings use the same methodology for all included grade levels."

"For each state, schools were assessed on their shares of students who were proficient or above proficient in their mathematics and reading/language arts state assessments," the site says. "Half of the formula assessed the scores themselves and the other half incorporated the test results in the context of socioeconomic demographics. In other words, the top-ranked schools are all high-achieving and have succeeded at educating all their students."

West Port High School (No. 230 statewide)
Forest High School
Vanguard High School
Dunnellon High School
Lake Weir High School
According to the U.S. News website, high school rankings were determined based on the following criteria: College Readiness, 30%; State Assessment Proficiency, 20%; State Assessment Performance, 20%; Underserved Student Performance, 10%; and College Curriculum Breadth, 10%.
According to U.S. News, there are 4,212 elementary schools, 3,076 middle schools and 1,130 high schools in Florida.
