There was a big upset at the U.S. Open over the weekend, but you might not have heard about it.

With the tennis world focused on Serena Williams last week and the upset of Rafael Nadal on Monday, our local doubles star Desirae Krawczyk hasn't garnered much attention.

But as she shoots for a remarkable five Grand Slam titles in the last seven events, her best opportunity may have already dwindled.

Krawczyk and her partner Neal Skupski, who were seeded No. 1 at this year's U.S. Open and fresh off their Wimbledon championship, were knocked out in the Round of 16 on Sunday. The unseeded American team of Caty McNally and William Blumberg eliminated Krawczyk and Skupski 6-4, 6-2, bringing Krawczyk's mixed doubles hopes to an abrupt end.

Krawczyk was the defending mixed doubles champion at the U.S. Open having won last year's event with partner Joe Salisbury. In the last seven majors, Krawczyk has won four mixed doubles titles: the 2021 French Open, 2021 Wimbledon, 2021 U.S. Open and 2022 Wimbledon.

The Rancho Mirage native and Palm Desert grad still has a chance to hoist another major championship trophy, but she'll have to do it on the women's doubles side.

She and her partner Demi Schuurs moved into the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-4 win Monday over Zhang Shuai and Marta Kostyuk. Krawczyk has made one women's doubles Grand Slam final in her career but has never won a women's doubles slam.

Krawczyk and Schuurs will be in action again Wednesday, and Krawczyk will get a another shot at McNally. Krawczyk and Schuurs will face the American team of McNally and Taylor Townsend for a spot in the semifinals.
