Brunswick Civil War Round Table

The program examines how soldiers’ diverse personal backgrounds and emotions can eventually shape their lives when in the heat of battle.

The guest speaker will be Sarah Bierle who will share this contrast about two soldiers on opposite sides of the war in her presentation entitled, ❝A Tale of Two Artillerymen: Robert Beckham and Justin Dimick at Chancellorsville.❞

This presentation delves into the personal stories of Col. Robert Franklin Beckham and Lt. Justin E. Dimick, in addition to examining their artillery batteries and their decisions to fire along the Orange Turnpike during the Battle of Chancellorsville. Though on opposing sides, these young artillerymen’s stories remind us that history is about real people, and then takes a closer look at the common threads connecting their personal stories on the battlefield where both heroically died.

Bierle is managing editor for Emerging Civil War, and is currently working in the American Battlefield Trust’s Education Department, and is also a published author.

Everyone is welcone to attend the meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Hatch Auditorium on Caswell Beach. Registration begins at 6:15 p.m. The program starts at 7 p.m. The visitor fee is $10, which can include a spouse, and could be applied toward the $25 annual membership dues.

National Night Out

The Leland Police Department will be hosting National Night Out, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Founders Park, 113 Town Hall Drive.

National Night Out is an annual community building campaign that promotes partnerships between police and the communities they serve, along with neighborhood camaraderie to make the neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.

The event will include food trucks, live music, games, and the opportunity to meet and engage with local law enforcement.

Leland's Live at the Park

The town of Leland is excited to bring back a family favorite this fall — Live at the Park. The Legacy Motown Revue will perform beginning at 6:30 p..m. Thursday, Oct. 6 at Founders Park, 113 Town Hall Drive. Food truck on site, picnics/coolers welcomed. Bring a blanket and/or chair. No smoking. Alcohol and pets are not allowed.

First Friday Gallery Walk at Franklin Square

Three exhibits currently on display will highlight the First Friday Gallery Walk.

The walk will be held 5-7 p.m. Oct. 7 at Franklin Square Gallery and will include refreshments and live music.

The Soup Mug Challenge, featuring beautiful, large mugs suitable for serving your favorite fall soups, will be one of the exhibits. Potters were asked to include favorite soup recipes with their mugs. Everyone can vote for their favorite mugs.

An exhibit of diverse pieces, that features works by students who take classes at Franklin Square Gallery, will run until Saturday, Oct. 15.

The Members' Show, consisting of seven rooms of paintings and pottery created by over 100 artists of the Associated Artists of Southport, runs until Monday, Oct. 17. Works are done in a wide variety of styles, mediums, and sizes including a mini gallery, featuring paintings smaller than 9”x12”. Prints, cards, and gift items also are available.

The walk will also feature live demonstrations by several Associated Artists of Southport artists. Potter Thad Brewer will show hand building techniques using coils and slabs of clay to assemble pots and vases. Carol Kidd will use inks to dye silk scarves producing beautiful abstract patterns. Prentiss Halladay will demonstrate how to paint a wet-on-wet sky in a watercolor painting, achieving soft effects when painting clouds. Chris Sutherland will show how to use watercolor paints with pen and ink. She will also have her ❝Tree of Love❞ and ❝Love on the Beach❞ prints to personalize. Deb Voso will use fluid paints, resin, and inks in an experimental manner, allowing them to flow together in dynamic colors or subtle tints, producing beautiful abstract compositions.
