U.S. Postal Service to conduct 'hiring blitz' in San Bernardino and Riverside counties

As part of the U.S. Postal Service’s plan to improve service and return to financial sustainability, several post offices in San Bernardino and Riverside counties will participate in a one-day "hiring blitz."

The USPS will conduct on-site hiring events for mail carriers and clerks from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Coachella Valley locations including Cathedral City, Indio, Palm Desert, Palm Springs and La Quinta at 79125 Corporate Center Drive.

Other sites are Beaumont, Colton, Hemet, Lake Elsinore, Moreno Valley, Murrieta, Redlands, Rialto, Riverside Main, Temecula, Yucaipa, San Bernardino on Fifth Street, and Sun City on Cherry Hills Boulevard.

Available mail carrier and clerk positions offer starting pay from $18.92 to $19.12 an hour, with the opportunity for possible long-term careers, postal officials said.

USPS personnel will be onsite to answer questions, assist potential applicants and provide detailed information about available positions.

USPS employment requirements include the following:

  • Must be 18 years old at the time of appointment or 16 with a high school diploma.

  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check, drug screening, and medical assessment.

  • Must be a U.S citizen, permanent resident, or citizen of American Samoa or other U.S. Territory.

  • Must provide recent employment history.

  • Must have a safe driving record.

Delivering for America Plan

“As outlined in our USPS Delivering for America plan, we’re modernizing and continually adapting to the changing needs of our customers,” said USPS’s San Diego-based Human Resources Manager Carol Capone in a press release. “In order to do that, we need motivated, dedicated people to join us to deliver for our local communities and our nation.

Launched in 2021 the USPS’ DFA Plan is a 10-year strategy to return the organization to financial sustainability and achieve service excellence while maintaining universal six-day mail delivery and expanding seven-day package delivery, postal officials said.

A few milestones in the first year of the plan, according to the USPS, include:

  • Conversion of nearly 63,000 pre-career employees into career positions.

  • Attempting to reverse decades of losses: The USPS remains on track to achieve break-even operations for the 10-year period and to reverse what had been a projected $160 billion loss for the same period.

  • Completed key steps in the ongoing reorganization and streamlining of Postal Service business units in October 2021, which has achieved greater role clarity and accountability, and improved workforce empowerment and organizational focus across the enterprise.

  • Investing in postal infrastructure. Nearly $6.3 billion has been committed from a $40 billion-plus commitment to invest in core postal infrastructure over 10 years. Part of this includes ordering an initial 50,000 technologically-advanced Next Generation Delivery Vehicles for $3 billion, including 10,019 battery electric vehicles.
