U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro underwent surgery following cancer diagnosis

Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, is recovering after undergoing surgery Monday to remove tumors from his gastrointestinal tract following a cancer diagnosis last summer.

Castro, 48, announced his cancer diagnosis and surgery in a statement released Monday, adding that his "prognosis is good" and will spend the next few weeks recovering in Texas before returning to Washington, D.C.

Castro underwent his surgery at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. In his statement, He thanked the doctors, nurses and medical staff who tended to him as well as the staff at the University of Texas Health Science Center.

Here's the statement Castro's office issued:

"Today, I successfully underwent surgery to remove gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors. My prognosis is good. I expect to be home recovering in Texas for several weeks before returning to Washington to continue my work on behalf of the people of my hometown, San Antonio."

The lawmaker also shared that, after a series of tests, doctors found the tumors to be "small, slow-growing and mostly asymptomatic."

A gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumor is a rare form of cancer that occurs in the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, which is made up of the stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, according to the National Cancer Institute.
