SOUTH BEND — U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney will speak at Notre Dame next week.

The Wyoming congresswoman will address Notre Dame students, faculty, staff and alumni in a free event at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 14 in Washington Hall. She will also meet with undergraduate students belonging to the university's Menard Family Tocqueville Fellows.

Her lecture is sponsored by the university's Center for Citizenship and Constitutional Government and is titled "Saving Democracy by Revering the Constitution."

Why is Cheney visiting Notre Dame?

Cheney is Wyoming's sole member in the U.S. House of Representatives and is currently vice chair of the House select committee assigned to investigate the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Cheney is one of two Republican members serving on the January 6 committee and has been an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump, likely leading to her defeat by a double-digit margin to a Trump-backed challenger in Wyoming's GOP primary this August. The congresswoman's term ends in January.

Before serving in Congress, Cheney practiced law and worked for the U.S. Department of State, specializing in Middle Eastern affairs. She has been a Fox News analyst and co-authored the book, "Exceptional: Why the World Needs a Powerful America," with her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney.

Cheney, who was elected to Congress in 2016, currently sits on the House Armed Services Committee and from 2019 to 2021, was chair of the House Republican Conference, making her the third-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives at the time.

The Republican National Committee in February voted to censure Cheney and fellow January 6 Republican committee member Adam Kinzinger for their roles in investigating the attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The committee postponed a hearing — its first in two months — as Hurricane Ian ripped through Florida and parts of South Carolina. The committee has not announced a new hearing date.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, whose wife Ginni Thomas testified before the January 6 committee last week, spoke on campus last September at the invitation of Notre Dame's Center for Citizenship and Constitutional Goverment. In her closed session testimony last week, Ginni Thomas repeated disproven claims the the 2020 presidential election was stolen but offered no evidence, USA Today reported.

"The center strives to bring a diverse array of speakers to Notre Dame, including our nation's most consequential political leaders," Center for Citizenship and Constitutional Government Director Vincent Phillip Munoz said in a university news release this week. "We are honored to host a leader with a distinguished record of public service and hope that Congresswoman Cheney's visit will encourage the kind of thoughtful conversation about the future of American republicanism and the kind of political character necessary to sustain it."
