U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, a key Republican in Washington, D.C., is scheduled to be in Athens as one of two guest speakers at a special event to honor the late U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson.

The program is hosted by the University of Georgia’s School of Public and International Affairs.

The inaugural Isakson Symposium on Political Civility will beheld 10 a.m. Nov. 10 in the UGA Chapel on north campus.

Besides McConnell, U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, a democrat from West Virginia, is also scheduled for the program.

“Senator Isakson represented the very best of public service during his more than 40 years in elected office, and a hallmark of his career was his ability to get results by reaching across the aisle and engaging in civil discourse,” UGA President Jere W. Morehead said in a statement released with the announcement.

McConnell and Manchin were selected as speakers due to the “many years of service to the nation, their friendship with Isakson and their ability to navigate a polarized political landscape at the highest levels of government," according to UGA.

“I cannot think of a better way to carry on our dear friend’s legacy than by promoting discussion on this important topic,” McConnell said.

Isakson was a graduate of UGA who served in political life for more than four decades.
