U.S. sets record with 7-day average of new coronavirus cases

Coronavirus cases continue to surge at a record rate in the United States.

The seven-day rolling average of new cases in the U.S. reached a high mark of 68,767 on Sunday, CNN reported Monday.

That exceeds the seven-day stretch averaging 67,293 new daily cases that was recorded on July 22.

The U.S. experienced a single-day record with 83,757 new confirmed COVID-19 cases last Friday. It then reported its second-highest total since the start of the pandemic with 83,718 on Saturday.

The previous single-day record came on July 16 with 77,362 cases.

On Sunday, the U.S. passed 225,000 deaths from COVID-19, the most of any country. The U.S. has also recorded the most confirmed cases of coronavirus among all countries with more than 8.5 million.

Health experts have warned of a potential surge in cases during the fall and winter months.

Leading infectious diseases expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said last week that a national mask mandate could be necessary to curb the spread of the virus.

“If people are not wearing masks, then maybe we should be mandating it,” Fauci told CNN on Friday.

Last week, the University of Washington released data contending that more than 100,000 deaths could be avoided in the U.S. through February if 95% of people in the country wore masks.
