U.S. Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland arrives in Ukraine as aid bill hangs in the balance

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland arrived in Ukraine on Jan. 31, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink reported on X (Twitter).

"A warm welcome back to Ukraine, Undersecretary Victoria Nuland", she wrote.

The two will meet government leaders, veterans, and civil society to underscore their shared commitment to defeating Russian aggression in Ukraine, she said.

Inspectors general from the United States Departments of Defense and State, as well as the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) arrived in Kyiv on Jan. 29.

Their meetings with implementers, partners, and the Ukrainian government support oversight and accountability for U.S. assistance to Ukraine, Brink said.

These visits are taking place amid the U.S. funding suspension.

U.S. President Joe Biden expressed hope on Jan. 20 that the Democratic-controlled Senate will reach a bipartisan agreement on strengthening the border with Mexico and migration policy.

While pro-Trump Republicans demand the rejection of a compromise deal on immigration, Biden's massive aid package for Ukraine, Israel ,and other security needs is hanging in the balance, the Financial Times wrote.

Trump claims the Senate Border Bill “horrific” adding that “there is zero chance he will support this horrible open borders betrayal of America".

A bill to fund aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, totaling about $106 billion, did not pass procedural voting in the U.S. Senate on Dec. 6 due to Republican demands for stricter immigration policy. They want to see a strengthened U.S.-Mexico border in return for support to pass the bill for aid to Ukraine and Israel.
